The Democratic Green Party of Rwanda joins all Rwandans in the 24th commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. We stand in unison with the nation and genocide survivors in the fight against genocide denial and the spread of genocide ideology. DGPR would like to take on this opportunity to call upon the Rwandan Government and all concerned stakeholders to add more efforts in social and economic support programs to rape victims, children born out of rape, divorced women and all genocide survivors. Government needs to address trauma problems in the survivor families, since most are still struggling to have shelter, food, education and lack employment opportunities. DGPR calls upon Local government entities to pay special attention to genocide survivors and address the challenges faced on community level. They need to be sensitized on their rights, like access to medical care outside the country, and so on. Stereotyping of children born out of rape during the genocide should also stop. They have been given names such as, ‘abana b’interahamwe- kids of Interahamwe, abana b’amateka-kids of history, urwibutso-memorial’’, these and many more names make these children feel unwanted in the society and cause more trauma. The issue of genocide ideology needs to be fought with extra vigor, some reports in 2016 indicated that 67% of the youth had genocide ideology. Parents are requested to play a positive role in healing these wounds and giving proper education to their children. Government should find special land and give to the survivor divorced women, who are the girls who survived the genocide, but later got married and their marriage failed, these women have nowhere to go to (having grown up in group homes), whereas in our culture, girls can always come back to their parents when marriage fails. It’s the government’s responsibility to find them a place they can call a permanent home. The Democratic Green Party of Rwanda would like to thank Unity Club and other stakeholders who have contributed in helping the elderly who survived the genocide. The Democratic Green Party of Rwanda, takes on this opportunity to thank all party members, well-wishers, the media fraternity, Government of Rwanda, the International community, the Global Greens Family and the public for the different support accorded to the party during 2017. The Democratic Green Party of Rwanda scored highly during 2017. It was the year, when all consolidated achievements, since its formation in August 2009, were put at display. In March, the party held its national congress, where it approved the party’s political program and manifesto and subsequently its flag bearer for the upcoming Presidential elections. This was not an easy achievement, it required physical presence of party delegates from all the 30 districts of the country. In June, the party’s flag bearer, Dr.Frank Habineza, presented the presidential candidature dossier to the National Electoral Commission and was later approved as a Presidential candidate. The party was able to successfully campaign in all the 30 districts of the country, from 14th July to 2nd August, although some challenges were faced in some places, hope was never lost. The results of the elections were not pleasing as had been expected but were accepted for the greater good of the Republic. In October, after a short break from the elections, the party resumed its activities and has been holding meetings and trainings in different parts of the country in preparation for the upcoming Parliamentary elections, planned in September 2018. DGPR has therefore, been able to select aspiring parliamentary candidates from 15 districts as by end of December 2017. These are: Ruhango, Gicumbi, Nyamasheke, Nyamagabe, Muhanga, Musanze, Rusizi, Bugesera, Nyaruguru, Gatsibo, Ngoma, Nyabihu, Kayonza, Rwamagana and Nyanza. We hope to finalise the remaining 15 districts in the first half of 2018 and thereafter submit the party list to the National Electoral Commission. We would like to request local authorities to stop different types of harassment to our members, whom are still looked at as enemies of the state. We would like to remind them that being in opposition does not qualify us as enemies of the state. On behalf of the Democratic Green Party of Rwanda, we wish to thank you all for standing with us. Please accept our sincere best wishes to you and your families for a wonderful holiday season and a very prosperous New Year 2018.
